From England to Fayetteville: Falling in Love with West Virginia

“Let’s stay at the Carnifex Ferry Cabins – the guidebook says they’re nice.”  Husband and wife team Kristy and JonathanGrant-Hart decided to visit Almost Heaven in October 2018 to ride the white water and have s’mores cooked over the fire.  Jonathan, a Brit, and Kristy, an American who’d lived in London, England for 8 years, were looking for an outdoor playground, and West Virginia fit the bill.

The two fell in love with the New River Gorge immediately.  They saw potential in tourism in the State, and quickly began to discuss investing in the area. Once home in London, Kristy phoned the owner of Canifex Ferry Cabins to ask about his experience of tourism in the area.  She was taken aback by his response: “I’ll make it easy for you, I’m retiring, you can buy mine.”

After six months of research, bank meetings, and with the invaluable help and support of West Virginia Small Business Development Center’s Shannon Mitchell, Kristy and Jonathan completed their purchase of the cabins in April 2019.

In the days that followed, they commissioned Kristy’s sister, a talented interior designer, to make decorative upgrades to the cabins, a process which will continue throughout 2019, and upgraded every cabin with new, hotel quality, bed linens.

They revamped the website and launching online booking, and are beginning a social media campaign. They even bought a house in Fayetteville, and are now resident of West Virginia.Kristy said “We are so grateful to be the new custodians of Carnifex Ferry Cabins and the historic land that surrounds them. We’re delighted to be welcoming guests to our slice of Almost Heaven!
